Buying and/or selling a home can feel exciting and daunting at the same time. Between navigating complicated paperwork, local regulations, rules, and laws, and considering important property information, a good agent is a game changer.
But how do you know an agent is good for you? Here are some things to look out for:
Experience
We know, this feels like a no-brainer. Remember that experience comes in all shapes and sizes. Asking your potential Realtor® about all their relevant experience is critical because they can impart important information from working on previous transactions, knowledge of the history and nature of the properties, and of course current and past market conditions.
They Have Multiple Certifications
Did you know agents can have a variety of qualifications? While it’s not strictly necessary to have multiple certifications, its important to use a licensed Realtor® who has proven to have taken the time to improve their knowledge which translates into a better experience for you. For example:
Accredited Buyer’s Representative (ABR) -designed for real estate buyer agents who focus on working directly with buyer-clients at every stage of the home buying process. (source)
At Home With Diversity/ AHWD-designated for working effectively with – and within – today’s diverse real estate market. (source)
To name just two! These certifications point to the continuing education your Realtor® uses to keep themselves up to date, and knowledgeable about all facets of the market.
Negotiation Skills
Ask about their past experiences, and how they’ve handled different situations for previous clients. A good Realtor® should have the negotiation skills to help you get the best deal possible and allow time for your due diligence and loan process if applicable.
Boots on the Ground
Being a part of the real estate community (on top of being a Maui community member) is important, because not only do you want local knowledge. You want them to have the ability to check other sources outside the main market. Such as for sale by owner, off market properties, etc.
Ethical Treatment and Objective Care
This is where word of mouth helps. Your Realtor® should treat everyone equally well, and this includes you. Their first and foremost concern is you the very best deal.
Familiarity with the Area
Maui real estate is unique and ever changing. There’s a wide diversity of properties, areas and market conditions. You’ll need a Realtor® who isn’t just familiar with the island, but passionate and knowledgeable about island life. This is where Bello Realty, Inc. comes in. We’ve been a boutique real estate company in Maui for over 40 years, we are Maui experts.
