Hobbies Now That You're On Maui

Whether you are visiting, or a resident, Hawaii-specific hobbies shouldn’t be overlooked! Spend a day trying something new or add a hobby to your routine and find new ways of having fun.

Snorkeling

We know, this is hardly revolutionary. But hear us out: there’s a reason why snorkeling is such a huge part of Maui’s tourism industry. And if you haven’t taken the time to check out your local reef, and learn to identify common fish, you are missing out on a vibrant part of Maui just under the water’s surface!

Volunteer at a Cultural Center

Volunteering at one of Maui’s museums or institutions is a great way to merge cultural learning and community building. May we suggest checking out the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, Maui Historical Society (aka Bailey House Museum), or the Alexander and Baldwin Sugar Museum

Farm Tours

If you’d like to experience nature, but hiking isn’t your cup of tea, becoming a Maui Farm Tour connoisseur might become your new favorite activity! Learn about native plants, local agriculture, and the people who make it possible. Some popular options are the Maui Chocolate Tour, the Ali’i Kula Lavendar Farm, and the Maui Tropical Plantation.

Read Local Literature

“Sure,” you might be saying, “but what about those of us who’d rather lay on the beach, or stay off our feet?” We’ve got you. Hawaii has produced both authors and stories of enchanting renown, and we recommend you check them out. Here’s a list to get started:

Contemporary Literature: Under Maui Skies and Other Stories by Wayne Moniz

Fantasy: Rise of the Manō by Leialoha Humpherys

For the kiddos: Honu 5690 written and illustrated by Shaowei Liu

Poetry: Ask the Brindled by No‘u Revilla

Growing Native Plants

Perhaps you’ve been inspired by a farm tour, or you’re looking to spruce up your outdoor space at home. “Planting-out” native Hawaiian plants is a wonderful thing to do both for yourself, and the environment. Growing Native Hawaiian Plants by Heidi Bornhorst is an excellent resource and place to begin
