Questions to Ask When Buying a Home
There are many questions you could ask when buying a home, but there are also definitely some questions you should ask. While this list isn’t all encompassing, it’s a great place to start:
Are there any anticipated renovations?
What will you need to replace in the far off, or nearer, future? How’s the roof? The appliances? The hot water heater? When was the last time the previous owners had to call a plumber?
What much work is the yard?
If looking at a place with a lawn or a garden, you’ll want to consider their maintenance. Perhaps having a place where you can spend hours outside is important for you. Or perhaps you want, at max, three feet of grass you can spray with a hose.
How much are other homes in the area selling for?
This can help you get an idea of fair price.
What are the pros and cons of the surrounding area?
Is the home in a natural disaster zone? Near a school? How busy are the streets? Where is the nearest grocery store? How about noise pollution? What’s the average utilities cost for other nearby homeowners?
What is the previous owner’s reason for selling?
Are they simply looking to downsize, or upgrade? Or is there another reason that would be a pro or a con for you? Also, how long has the home been on the market?
